The Amapari gold deposit is located in Amapá State, northern Brazil, in the Amazon region and is 100% owned by Mineração Pedra Branca do Amapari ("MPBA"), a subsidiary of New Gold Inc., that acquired the mineral rights from AngloGold. The mine is situated 15 km from the town of Serra do Navio, where a local company operated a manganese mine for more than 40 years until its exhaustion in 1998. Serra do Navio is served with a hospital, school and basic town facilities which can be used by the mine, and is also well served by transport infrastructure (road, railway and airport) and an electricity supply.
The mine is located only 15 kilometres (km) from a trunk line of a 75 MW capacity hydroelectric power station offering abundant power (Amapari requires 4 MW). It is also located only 16 km from both a 200 km paved and gravel road from the state capital, Macapa, and a 200 km railroad from Porto Santana (located on the Amazon River). The existing port facilities at Porto Santana include heavy lift equipment for direct loading onto rail.
